Thredo vs Gorgias

Gorgias is a helpdesk with an AI agent in it. Thredo is an AI agent with an inbox attached. That difference explains almost every row below, including the ones where Gorgias wins.

Prices read from the vendors' own pages on 17 August 2026.

The short version

Choose Gorgias

When the agent has to change the order

Cancellations, address edits, item swaps and reshipments are its documented actions, and they close tickets Thredo can only hand to a person. Choose it too if you want one system for tickets, macros, SLAs and CSAT — Thredo has none of those and is not trying to.

Choose Thredo

When the conversation is anonymous, and cheap

A storefront widget and WhatsApp, where nobody is logged in, an order lookup has to prove identity first, and you are paying per reply instead of $0.90 a resolution. Choose it if the AI is the only part of a helpdesk you actually wanted.

Gorgias's actions are as documented on its own AI Agent pages. The last three rows are where both tools stop, and both stop for the same reason: an automated refund is a decision, not a lookup.

The one asymmetry

Email tells you who is asking. A chat box does not.

Most support agents grew up in an inbox, where identity arrives free with the message — the email came from the address on the order. Put the same agent behind an anonymous widget on a storefront and that assumption is gone, quietly.

  • Thredo asks for two facts that must both match before it says anything about an order.
  • A wrong answer and a missing order are indistinguishable, so the widget cannot be used to probe whether an order exists.
  • It fails closed. When the lookup is uncertain, it escalates rather than guessing.
  • It never returns an order total or a full address to an unverified visitor.

This is not a claim that Gorgias is insecure. It is a claim that no vendor in this category documents shopper identity verification, because the channel used to do it for them — and a storefront widget is the case where that stops being true.

The questions that actually decide it

Should I move off Gorgias to Thredo?

Probably not, if Gorgias is already your helpdesk and it works. You would be trading a full ticketing system — macros, views, SLAs, assignment, CSAT — for an agent and a shared inbox, to save money on a line item that is only large if your volume is large. The switch makes sense when the AI is the only part you use, or when you are choosing for the first time.

What exactly can Gorgias do to an order that Thredo cannot?

Six documented actions: cancel an order and restock it, edit the shipping address, remove an item, replace an item, send a free reshipment, and add an order note. Notably it does not do standalone refunds, returns, exchanges, discounts or subscription changes either. Thredo does none of the six — it reads order status, carrier, tracking and due date, and escalates anything that would change the order.

Which is cheaper at 500 conversations a month?

At $0.90 a resolution, 500 resolutions is $450 on Gorgias before any plan fee. On Thredo's $79 Growth plan, 500 conversations at 4 replies each is 2,000 replies, inside the 5,000-reply allowance, so $79. The gap is real, but it is a gap between an agent and a helpdesk-with-an-agent, not between two of the same thing.

Does Gorgias verify who it is talking to?

Not in a way it documents. Its guardrails are state-based — unfulfilled orders only, a date window, the shopper confirms the new address, escalate if payment details change — and its security FAQ addresses the Shopify connection rather than shopper identity. That is a reasonable model when the conversation arrives by email from the account holder. It is a different question in an anonymous chat box on a storefront, which is the case Thredo was built around.

Can I run both?

Yes, and for some teams that is the right answer: Gorgias as the helpdesk for email and tickets, Thredo on the storefront widget and WhatsApp where identity is not established and the conversation is anonymous. They do not fight over the same inbox.
