AI customer support tools, honestly compared
Eight tools that answer customer messages for you, ranked for one specific reader: a small team handling under about 2,000 conversations a month, with no support department and no appetite for an enterprise contract.
Written by the team behind Thredo, which is first on this list. That is a conflict of interest, so here is how we have handled it: the scope is stated above rather than implied, every tool gets the case where it beats us, and the two things Thredo cannot do are in its own entry rather than buried. Prices are each vendor’s published rate, read on 17 August 2026.
Key takeaways
- Cheapest per conversation: Thredo, at roughly $0.063 against $0.90–$0.99 for the per-resolution tools.
- Most capable: Gorgias, which is the only tool here that will cancel an order or change a shipping address.
- Best free option: Shopify Inbox AI, included with Shopify since June 2026 — start here if you are Shopify-only.
- Most mature: Intercom Fin, and priced accordingly, with per-seat fees on top of per-resolution.
- The question that decides it: does the agent need to change orders, or only answer questions about them? That single line splits this list in two.
The eight, ranked
-
1. Best for multi-channel support where nobody is logged in
Thredo
- Price
- $29–$199/mo
- What it meters
- Per reply the agent sends
Where it wins: Six channels on one thread per customer, two-factor identity checks before it says anything about an order, and by some distance the lowest cost per conversation here.
Where it does not: Reads orders but cannot change them. No helpdesk layer — no macros, SLAs, views or CSAT. No SMS or voice.
-
2. Best for when the agent has to change the order
Gorgias AI Agent
- Price
- $0.90 per resolution
- What it meters
- Per resolved conversation
Where it wins: Six documented write actions — cancel and restock, edit the shipping address, remove or replace an item, free reshipment, order note. A full ecommerce helpdesk underneath.
Where it does not: About fourteen times the cost per conversation at typical thread lengths, and no documented shopper identity verification for anonymous chat.
-
3. Best for shopify stores that only need order lookups
Shopify Inbox AI
- Price
- Free
- What it meters
- Not metered
Where it wins: Included with Shopify since the Spring 2026 edition, already installed, and it answers product and order questions from admin data with no setup at all.
Where it does not: Storefront chat only — no WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram or email. No write actions, no helpdesk.
-
4. Best for teams already running intercom
Intercom Fin
- Price
- $0.99 per resolution
- What it meters
- Per resolved conversation, plus seats
Where it wins: The most mature agent in the category, on a platform that does tickets, product tours and outbound as well.
Where it does not: The only tool here that charges per seat on top of per resolution. Priced for teams several times the size of this page’s reader.
-
5. Best for a simple website chatbot on a small budget
Tidio Lyro
- Price
- $59–$749/mo
- What it meters
- Lyro AI conversations metered separately
Where it wins: Cheap to start, quick to install, and familiar to anyone who has used a website chat widget before.
Where it does not: AI conversations are billed on top of the plan, so the advertised price is not the price. Weaker on messaging channels than on web chat.
-
6. Best for larger teams already standardised on zendesk
Zendesk AI
- Price
- Not published
- What it meters
- Per resolution, quote-based
Where it wins: Deep integration with the most widely deployed helpdesk in the world, and the reporting to match.
Where it does not: Pricing is quote-based, so it cannot be compared here honestly. Aimed well above small teams.
-
7. Best for enterprise ticket deflection
Forethought
- Price
- Not published
- What it meters
- Quote-based
Where it wins: Built around deflection and triage at volume, with the analytics an enterprise support org expects.
Where it does not: Enterprise sales motion and enterprise pricing. Not a self-serve option.
-
8. Best for teams already on freshdesk
Freshworks Freddy
- Price
- Not published
- What it meters
- Per session, quote-based
Where it wins: Bundled sensibly if Freshdesk is already the helpdesk, so the marginal cost is lower than it looks.
Where it does not: Little reason to choose it unless Freshworks is already in place.

Sources: Gorgias, Intercom, Tidio, Shopify Editions Spring 2026. Read 17 August 2026. Four of the eight do not publish a price; those rows say so rather than guessing.
How this was put together
Every figure came from the vendor’s own pricing page on 17 August 2026, not from a review site. Capability claims came from vendor documentation, not from marketing pages.
- Where a vendor does not publish a price, the row says Not published. No estimates.
- Per-conversation figures assume 4 agent replies to settle one conversation, because Thredo meters replies and the others meter resolutions. Comparing the two without stating a divisor is how these pages mislead.
- No tool here was scored on a feature we had not confirmed in its documentation.
What this page cannot tell you
On the other hand, three things a comparison table is genuinely bad at — and they may matter more than the price.
- Answer quality on your questions. Every tool here demos well. The only test that counts is your own last twenty tickets.
- What support is like when it breaks. Not comparable from the outside, and not something a vendor will tell you.
- Where each product will be in a year. Shopify shipped a free native agent in June 2026 and reset the floor for everyone on this list, ourselves included.
Questions people ask before choosing
What is AI customer support?
AI customer support is software that reads a customer’s message, finds the answer in sources the business supplied — a website, a product catalogue, an order system — and replies without a person writing that reply. The useful distinction is not how clever the model is but what the agent is allowed to do: most tools answer questions, some also perform actions like cancelling an order, and the good ones escalate to a human rather than guessing when they were not told the answer.
Which AI customer support tool is cheapest?
Per conversation resolved, Thredo — roughly $0.063 at 4 agent replies on the $79 plan, against $0.90 for Gorgias and $0.99 for Intercom Fin. Shopify Inbox AI is free but only covers storefront chat on Shopify. The comparison is not quite like for like: Thredo meters replies while Gorgias and Intercom meter resolved conversations, so a long thread narrows the gap.
Can an AI agent cancel an order or issue a refund?
Some can and most should not. Gorgias performs six documented write actions including cancelling an order and editing a shipping address. Thredo deliberately performs none — it reads order status and escalates anything that would change the order. Neither issues standalone refunds, because a refund is a decision rather than a lookup, and an agent that makes it is either giving away margin or refusing a customer you wanted to keep.
Do I need one if I am on Shopify?
Not necessarily. Shopify Inbox has included a free native AI agent since 17 June 2026, and if your questions are storefront-only and mostly about orders, that is the honest place to start. A paid tool earns its money when customers reach you on WhatsApp, Instagram or email as well, because that is where a single thread per customer starts to matter.
How is this list ranked?
By fit for the reader this page is written for: a team under roughly 2,000 conversations a month, without a support department. Thredo is first because it is our product and it fits that description best on price and channel coverage — not because it is the most capable tool here. Gorgias does more, Intercom Fin is more mature, and both say so in the entries below.
If you only read one paragraph
If your agent must cancel orders and change addresses, buy Gorgias. If you are on Shopify and only need order lookups in storefront chat, start with the free Shopify agent and spend nothing. If your customers message you on WhatsApp, Instagram and email as well as your website, and you want one thread per person at a fraction of the per-conversation cost, that is what Thredo is for — and 50 messages are free, with no card, so you can settle it on your own queue rather than on anyone’s table.
